The realm of alkaline-based fuel cells has with the arrival anionic exchange membrane (AEMFCs) taken a great step to replace traditional liquid electrolyte alkaline (AFCs). following review summarises progress, bottleneck issues and highlights most recent research trends within field. activity catalyst materials greatly advanced, however achieving long-term stability remains challenge. Great AEMFC performances are reported, though these generally obtained through employment platinum group metals (PGMs), thus emphasising importance R&D related non-PGM materials. Thorough design strategies must be utilised for all components, avoid mismatch electrochemical properties between electrode components. Lastly, optimisation challenges on system-level will also have assessed, as few application-size AEMFCs been built tested. • Alkaline-based discoveries mostly relate membranes (AEMs). Improving abundant low-cost is required. Notable progress made creating AEMs good conductivity. Ionomer-catalyst compatibility essential during MEA creation. A transition from lab-scale application-level required advance AEMs.
